No Good Deed Goes Unpunished (California)

One day the manager of a lumber yard in San Jose wanted to increase productivity and did so by removing safety guards from the company machinery. Of course within a matter of days a young 23-year-old worker lost two fingers while cutting wood due to an exposed rotating blade. As luck would have it, his primary care hand surgeon did an absolutely excellent job reattaching the two fingers. While off work and recovering from the accident, the injured worker's friends all told him how rich he was going to be because of this accident. The kid had dreams of buying a fancy new truck with the money he was sure to receive when settling his work comp claim. However, due to the excellent medical care provided by the treating doctor, along with the fabulous results from the microsurgery on his fingers, the amount of permanent disability was exceptionally minimal. Remarkably, the kid made almost a complete recovery with full use and strength of his fingers. When he eventually discovered how little settlement money he was going to receive due to this injury, the kid actually blamed the doctor and yelled at him during a follow up appointment. He then fired him on the spot. The doctor was taken so aback by his patient's reaction that he abandoned treating injured workers for the next 20 years. It appears that money was worth more to the kid than his fingers.
