Articles (California)

Why do we have to pay for articles that can be found in news.

Here's an example:

WCC headline: CA - 2nd DCA: Sending 1099 of Settlement to IRS Was Not Retaliation 09/08

It costs $7 if you want to read about it.

Hi Gerald:

You don't have to pay for the news if you don't want to. You are free to scour the Internet for content that you wish to view for free. Or you could pay to view what our writers have summarized.

In the example you note the story is many times longer than our story, and is basically a verbatim of the case. Our readers don't want to read the whole case most of the time unless they are doing research so our editors take the time (and guess what - time costs MONEY) to read, summarize and edit to the salient points our readers have told us they want.

Also, do you propose to view hundreds of sites per day to get just the news you want? If so, then again, feel free to do so at your time and expense. Our value is that we are saving our subscribers that time and expense.

Again, if you don't want to subscribe, don't. It's a free economy and you are certainly entitled to spend your money as you wish. Or, if you like, you can start a competing service and learn what the real world of market based economics is all about.

First of all the news is not free you have to expose yourself to ads; plus the prices of anything you buy includes a portion of the cost for running ads.

Second, those who pay are paying for the service, are paying for WCC to sift through and collect the news. My company pays the subscription fee, and it passes that cost onto its customers. You are also paying some ISP so you can navigate the web - if you are using your companies ISP, then that company is passing on those costs to its customers just as every company whose product you buy does to you.

Consumers pay for everything. The costs are just hidden in the prices you pay. In essence you are constantly paying whether you realize it or not.
