Arthritis (California)

Doctor assigned two ratings for knee joint arthritis, one for medial joint and one for lateral joint. However, table 17-31 has only one entry for the knee joint. I'm inclined to only rate the more severe of the two. Section 17.2 h of the Guides does not address the issue. Any thoughts?

I think that you are on the right track by using the more severe. I think that you may find that is the instruction in the Guides. I do not believe that the two imparments are added together.
Good luck!

when rating the knee joint, one takes the more severe (lateral or medial). don't forget that the patellofemoral joint is another joint, so whether that's under table 17-31 (x-ray evidence) or footnote 17-31 (no x-rays needed), that is addition to the knee joint (if ratable).

page 344 A Medical Legal Companion to the AMA Guides Fifth is a good cite. Last paragraph.
